Axolotl Care

Identifying Features

Axolotls come in two main colours black and white but
other colours such as gold may be seen.
They are a over grown tadpole which never grows up and
lives a totaly aquatic ( lives in water ) life.
They can grow from 7 - 9 inches long.

This is the black form of an axolotl.

Housing

One Axolotls can be housed in a cage 18 inches
(1½ feet - 45 cm) and a pair can be housed in a 2 foot (60 cm) cage.
It is best to keep axolotls in a bare tank
because they will eat gravel and knock plants over.
They need dechloronated water,
a liquid which dechloronates it,
can be purchased from fish stores.
A filter should be in the tank which can also be purhased from fish stores.

Feeding

Axolotls will eat most live foods Crickets, Mealwors, Locosts etc.
But it is much easier to feed them pieces of raw meat
such as lambs heart or liver.
They should be five pieces per axolotl, three days a week.
The pieces should be 1cm cubed.

Cleaning

The water should changed every one - two weeks.
The poos and leftover food should be
synphoned out with a synphon cleaner.

Breeding

A Male and a Female should be placed in a tank with
pebbles on the bottom and floating plastic plants.
It should be well filtered.
In some time you will find some eggs
attached to plastic plants and pebbles.
You should remove the pebbles and plants,
put them in another cage ( single adult size ).
When the eggs hatch into tadpoles keep them like the adults,
but feed them Brine Shrimp and Daphinee,
four times a week.
When they are like tiny axolotles they should be removed
and put in small groups.
When they have grown old enough they
should be fed on pieces of meat
.
